As a designer and a blogger I use image optimization tools on a daily basis. They’re probably some of the most used tools I work with it every day. When we talk about image optimization tools, we talk about offline and online photo editors, scripts used to optimize your images or the image size, offline and online photo file format converters and much more.
Until a few years ago I was only using Adobe Photoshop for all the image editing and optimization I needed, both for blogging and for my graphic designs. The recent developments in software, and especially in online software made it possible for a lot of free image optimization tools to appear, especially online tools.
Thus I started using several online tools (some of them actually turned into WordPress plugins) I couldn’t image myself without now. The point to this is that image optimization tools make your life a lot easier, make you work faster, smarter and eventually save you money.
What you can do with image optimization tools?
- optimize the size of your web images
- convert your images from one format to another
- cut, crop, apply effects to your images
- re-size images
- same time and money
- improve your workflow
Below I collected some of the best image optimization tools available at the time I write this article. Enjoy!
A simple and effective image optimization tool based on the algorithms from Kraken.io.
PicMonkey is a very cool online tool for editing and optimizing your images. It features a powerful online image editor.
TinyPNG uses smart lossy compression techniques to reduce the file size of your PNG files.
This awesome tool offers online, and for free, much of the functionality of Photoshop, including effects, working with layers and filters.
FotoFlexer is the world’s most advanced online digital photo editor. It performs advanced effects previously only available to professionals using expensive software. FotoFlexer was founded by Arbor Labs, a team of graduate students and alumni from the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology, University of California at Berkeley (and just one MIT/Stanford alum too).
Gifsicle is a command-line tool for creating, editing, and getting information about GIF images and animations.
ImageOptim optimizes images, so they take up less disk space and load faster, by finding best compression parameters and by removing unnecessary comments and color profiles. It handles PNG, JPEG and GIF animations.
This tool automates ImageOptim, ImageAlpha, and JPEGmini for Mac to make batch optimisation of images part of your automated build process.
Using this free online service, you can resize, compress and optimize your image files.
JPG & PNG Stripper
A tool for stripping/cleaning/removing uncessary metadata (junk) from JPG/JPEG/JFIF & PNG files. This image optimization tool doesn’t affect the image quality and has command line support.
ImageAlpha greatly reduces file sizes of 24-bit PNG files (including alpha transparency) by applying lossy compression and conversion to a more efficient PNG8+alpha format. Such images are compatible with iOS, all browsers, and even degrade well in IE6.
JPG Cleaner is simple but powerful utility for cleaning JPG files from anything that is not picture data. Commonly used programs such as Adobe Photoshop are writing additional information into JPG file that isn’t needed for correctly displaying the picture.
JPEGmini is a patent-pending photo recompression technology, which significantly reduces the size of photographs without affecting their perceptual quality. The technology works in the domain of baseline JPEG, resulting in files that are fully compatible with any browser, photo software or device that support the standard JPEG format.
jpegoptim is a utility for optimizing JPEG files. It provides lossless optimization (based on optimizing the Huffman tables) and “lossy” optimization based on setting a maximum quality factor.
A powerful command line JPG optimization and editing software.
iResize.com is a fast and free, simple-to-use online image resizing tool.
Ken Silverman’s Utility Page
Although not an optimization tool by itself this resource includes a huge collection of image editing and optimization tools.
A simple tool for optimizing your images.
Dynamic Drive Image Optimizer
Image Optimizer lets you easily optimize your gifs, animated gifs, jpgs, and pngs, so they load as fast as possible on your site. Furthermore, you can easily convert from one image type to another.
OptiPNG is a PNG optimizer that recompresses image files to a smaller size, without losing any information. This program also converts external formats (BMP, GIF, PNM and TIFF) to optimized PNG, and performs PNG integrity checks and corrections.
Pngcrush is an optimizer for PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files. It can be run from a commandline in Windows, or from a UNIX or LINUX commandline.
PNG Gauntlet combines PNGOUT, OptiPNG, and DeflOpt to create the smallest PNGs.
pngnq-s9 is a modified version of pngnq, the neural network colour quantizer for png images. Like pngnq, pngnq-s9 takes a full 32 bit RGBA png image, selects a palette of up to 256 colours, and then redraws the image in 8 bit indexed mode. The resulting image can be up to 70% smaller than the original.
An open source utility to optimize the file size of PNG images. The format allows encoders to apply a filter to each row in an image that transforms the bytes used to represent the pixels in the image data by mathematically relating them with bytes of neighbouring pixels.
PunyPNG is a free website optimization tool that dramatically reduces the file size of your images without any loss of quality.
Radical Image Optimization Tool (RIOT for short) is a free image optimizer that will let you to visually adjust compression parameters while keeping minimum filesize.
Shrink O’Matic is an AIR application to easily (batch) resize (shrink) images. It handles JPGs, GIFs and PNGs. Options allow you to choose the output sizes, rotation (supports EXIF data), names and location, formats and watermarks.
Yahoo! Smush It
Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a “lossless” tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. Smush.it also has a WordPress plugin that processes all your uploads automatically. This is one of the tools we are using here on ForPixels.
Tool for creating CSS sprites in order to minimize the HTTP requests and thus increase a website’s speed.
SuperGIF does one thing, and it does it extremely well, optimizing GIFs.
SuperPNG is a free Adobe Photoshop plug-in for working and optimizing PNG files.
SVG Cleaner helps you clean up your SVG files from unnecessary data. It has a lot of options for cleanup and optimization, works in batch mode, provides threaded processing and much more.
SVGo is a Nodejs-based tool for optimizing SVG vector graphics files.
